Respiratory diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality and affect patients of all age groups. This course aims to provide details on the normal structure and function of the respiratory tract, the pathophysiology of some common respiratory diseases, the disease-causing microbes/pathogens and the mechanisms of action of common drugs used.
At the end of the course, learner should be able to:
1. describe the normal structure and function of the respiratory system.
2. explain the mechanism of blood gas transport and changes in haemoglobin.
3. describe the underlying pathophysiology of some common respiratory diseases.
4. describe the role of some disease-causing microbes/pathogens in respiratory disease progression
5. explain the pharmacological basis of common drugs used in respiratory diseases
6. interpret the common clinical presentations of respiratory diseases.
