2. Colours are Adjectives
Colours are adjectifs. Adjectifs, in the French language, follow the noun it is attached to ; both in number and in gender.
As colours are adjectifs, they will generally, agree with the gender and the number of the noun it is attached to.
And the position of the colours, unlike in English, is after the noun
Examples :
un papillion bleu | ![]() | deux papillions bleus | |
| une lettre bleue | ![]() ![]() | deux lettres bleues |
2.1. The Exceptions
BUT , there are exceptions :
- Nouns that are used as adjectifs do not follow in number and gender
![]() | Fruit : les marrons | ![]() | Elle a les yeux marron |
![]() | precious stones : emeraud | ![]() | C'est un lac emeraud. |
- compound colours also do not follow the noun in number and gender
examples :
des cravates bleu clair
une jupe vert foncé
des vestes rouge cerise
des cirés bleu marine
- two colours linked by the conjunction 'et'
une couverture bleu et blanc
NOTE : Observe the difference between the two examples :
des marbres bleu et noir
des marbres bleus et noirs
