La Negation

BASIC NEGATION 

Basic negation is formed by placing “ne ... pas” around the conjugated verb.  
Ne becomes n' in front of a verb starting with a vowel or a mute h.  
  

  
 
 
Il aime le gâteau au chocolat.     --->        Il n’aime pas le gâteau au chocolat. 
Tu parles français.                          --->        Tu ne parles pas  français.  
J’habite à Paris.                               --->        Je n’habite pas à Paris.  

Other examples :
 

Tu ne vas pas en cours aujourd'hui?  Non. Je ne vais pas bien.   Je ne peux pas manger.  J'ai mal à la tête.

You're not going to class today?  No. I am not well.   I cannot eat.  I have a headache.

Remember : the indefinite article (un une, des) becomes de or d' after a negative expression. 
 
Il aime des bonbons.       --->       Il n’aime pas de bonbons. 
Il y a une horloge.             --->        Il n’y a pas d’horloge.
